“Fair is not everyone getting the same thing. Fair is everyone getting what they need” - Anonymous
Each student is a unique learner with diverse interests, experiences, learning processes, and strengths. Thus I do not expect all students to learn the exact same material in the exact same way, or to demonstrate their learning in the exact same manner. Based on the works of Carol Tomlinson, I believe that it is best practice to provide students with variety and choice, as much as possible, in the content, process, and product of learning.

Strategies

  • Multimodal instruction (eg. discussion, video, text, images, hands-on activities, independent and group work, graphic organizers)
  • Providing students with choice in the topic of their research (eg. which extreme environment they wanted to find out more about)
  • Providing students with choice in how they demonstrate their learning (eg. poster, presentation, Prezi, song, skit, essay, video, diagram)
  • Having leveled questions/assignments/readings
  • Monitoring student understanding to plan next steps in addressing their needs (diagnostic tests, exit slips, observation of student responses/discussions)
